Jerry Werner

Chapter 1:

The next thing that happened was a thing of nightmares! My stomach dropped. Instead of climbing, we were sinking rapidly towards the water!

Chapter 2:

It was 1961, and I was lying in the grass, flat on my back, in our softball field in west-central Wisconsin. The night sky was beautiful.

Chapter 3:

To make matters worse, he had no sense of humor. The only time I ever saw him smile was when his uncle died and left him $10,000. ($92,000 in 2023 dollars)

I loved it! Mr. Werner’s biography is an extremely powerful book and truly an inspiration. It starts out as the classical hero tale, including humble beginnings on a farm in Wisconsin, facing great and perilous adventures (including landing a jet plane while missing a tire, a feat few have attempted and survived!), and ultimately achieving many of your dreams (becoming #1 Top Gun graduate and being invited to become a test pilot for the US Navy). I would recommend the book just for those amazing and exciting stories and as a reminder of how much can be achieved by setting ambitious goals and being persistent, resourceful, and ambitious.

An engaging account of the aspirations of a Catholic boy growing up in a small conservative Midwest community. Having known the author in his youth, his raw, honest and revealing account of life came as no surprise. I was, however, pleasantly surprised at how “Disco” came about his Navy flight “handle” and how he related milestones in his life to the music of the times. Totally relatable! I sincerely hope that Jerry’s grandchildren (whom he wrote the book for) will cherish this account of this portion of his life and the lessons learned through his eyes for the gem that it is.

This book is more than a history of a man who has a lot of advice, both from those things he did right and those where he made mistakes. It is a book filled with treasures of perspective from a man who can look back on a life well lived and know that it was all worth it.

Reading Jerry Werner’s new book, “Grandpa’s Adventures in the US Navy – Soul-Searching on the Way to Mars, Vol 1.” brings back memories of several forerunner Naval Aviation-oriented books and movies (e.g., “The Fight of the Intruder”, “The Final Countdown”, “TOPGUN (both movies)”, “Raven One”, “Declared Hostile”, “Topgun Days”, and so on). In most of those books and movies, the primary emphasis is on carrier operations of Navy tactical aircraft (fighters and attack aircraft) – clearly, a demanding and thrilling environment that many of us enjoy reading about or watching, “Grandpa’s Adventures in the US Navy – Soul-Searching on the Way to Mars, Vol 1.” will easily satisfy the interests of ardent Navy tactical air aficionados! Jerry’s “Grandpa’s Adventures in the US Navy – Soul-Searching on the Way to Mars, Vol 1.” gives us the WHOLE story of his experiences rather than focusing solely on tales of his flying experiences, as exciting as they might be! This book shows us the personal side of naval aviation and that a pilot’s character is truly as important to a tactical pilot’s eventual success as his/her pure ability to fly a tactical jet. Try it! You’ll LIKE it!
